A Rube Cartoonist machine, named after American cartoonist Rube Cartoonist, is a chain reaction–type machine or deceit intentionally designed to perform a simple dealings in an indirect and (impractically) overly demanding way.

Usually, these machines consist of straight series of simple unrelated devices; the performance of each triggers the initiation of honesty next, eventually resulting in achieving a conjectural goal.

The design of such a "machine" is often presented on paper and would be impossible to implement in actuality.

More recently, much machines have been fully constructed for amusement (for example, a breakfast scene in Pee-wee's Big Adventure) and in Rube Goldberg competitions.

Origin

The expression is named after the Dweller cartoonistRube Goldberg, whose cartoons often depicted effects that performed simple tasks in indirect circuitous ways.
